El Fuerte is the most beautiful colonial town in northern Sinaloa. Lots of history here, for centuries it was a major trading post for gold and silver miners from the canyons. Some lovely colonial mansions line the cobblestone streets leading to a central Plaza de Armas, that comes alive in the evenings. One of this old mansions was restored in 2006 to a beautiful boutique hotel, the Hotel Torres del Fuerte, a must see when you are in El Fuerte.
One of the most prominent historic buildings is City Hall, built at the end of the 19th century and it was designed in the neoclassic style. The elegant entrance made up of many arches opens to a beautiful colored, arched, multi-story interior patio. Two blocks away is the Museo-Mirador who welcomes you to view a small art collection. The Posada Hidalgo, another historical building, also from the 19th century, is adorned with murals and graceful interior arches.
Due to El Fuerte’s proximity to the coast and its vast rivers and dams/lakes, the local restaurants emphasizes a variety of sea food. A must try is local grilled langustinos with a white-wine-cilantro sauce served at Bonifacio’s Gourmet Restaurant. Other traditional dishes include pescado sarandeado, beef jerky, chilorio, and grilled meats including filet, pork, goat, rabbit, duck, quail and more.
For the rest of your trip or for your return, you should pick up a hat to protect you from the sun. Sinaloa’s traditional handcrafts are palm hats with narrow brims and round crowns. You will also find rugs, hammocks and wool blankets along many Mexican souvenirs, arts and crafts.
El Fuerte has three large dams near by, Hidalgo, Huires and Dominguez, and they are great for the sports fishing aficionado. Also nearby is Mask Hill, home to more than 300 petroglyphs.
The Chepe (Chihuahua-Pacific Train) stops in El Fuerte daily on its way to and from Copper Canyon Mexico.
